To correctly inform the public as to the myths, unfounded beliefs, and outright disinformation in regard to jury trials, non-jury trials, insurance claim practices, the role of the plaintiff attorney, insurance company adjusters, and defense attorneys in handling and presenting civil litigation and non-jury cases.

Firm Overview

The Thomas Law Firm is an aggressive law firm with over 40 years of experience specializing in personal injury, workers' compensation, wrongful death, catastrophic injuries, and commercial litigation as well as probate and eminent domain. It routinely litigates in fifteen counties in Middle Tennessee but does handle cases statewide as well as out of state. The firm has gained a reputation for excellence in the courtroom, the Appellate Courts, and many other firms. Through frequent appearances before the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Tennessee Supreme Court, and Workers’ Compensation Panel, the firm has played a significant role in shaping Tennessee Law. We do not hesitate to challenge current laws we feel to be unjust, unfair, or inappropriate, which has resulted in changes to several laws that advance victim’s rights. Actively involved in legal organizations, our attorneys help monitor and oppose changes to Tennessee Law that would create unjust and unfair hardships for the people.

With significant trial experience in the State and Federal Courts, D. Russell Thomas has fourteen (14) years of service on the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Board of Governors for the 6th District of Tennessee, has tried several hundred cases, has been in practice for over 40 years, has been on the lecture circuit teaching legal seminars throughout Tennessee for the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association, he is the author of “Automobile Liability in Tennessee” as published in Trial Magazine, he is recognized as a Trial Master by the Andrew Jackson American Inns of Court, and served for two years as the president of the Andrew Jackson American Inns of Court. Other affiliations include the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Tennessee Association for Justice, LIFT, Rutherford County Bar Association, as well as the Andrew Jackson American Inns of Court.

Attorney Thomas has had multiple settlements for injury victims exceeding one million ($1,000,000.00) dollars. Over the 40 years of practice, Attorney Thomas has collected millions of dollars for his clients and helped over four thousand (4,000) families with legal problems. In recent years, the emphasis has been on fewer but more complex cases.

Much of the caseload comes from word-of-mouth referrals from clients and referrals from other attorneys and law firms. We have limited advertising in order to manage a limited caseload to maintain personalized client contact.

Attorney D. Russell Thomas was raised in Cannon County, Tennessee. He attended Middle Tennessee State University (B.S., 1974) and was a member of Kappa Sigma while studying for his undergraduate degree. He attended Memphis State University obtaining a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in December of 1977. While at MSU he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta. Mr. Thomas was admitted to the Tennessee Bar on April 15, 1978, and was admitted to the U.S. District Court in the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee.

D. Russell Thomas is a 1985 Graduate of ATLA’s Advanced Civil Litigation Course. Mr. Thomas served on the Board of Governors as the Representative for the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association for the 6th District of Tennessee, from 1991 – 2005. He is a member of the Rutherford County, Tennessee, and American Bar Associations, The American Association for Justice, The Tennessee Association for Justice (Legislative Committee, 2000 – 2004), Trial Master, and served as the 2005 - 2006 President of the Andrew Jackson American Inns of Court. He is the author of “Automobile Liability in Tennessee” published in Trial Magazine which is a statewide publication for trial lawyers.

Mr. Thomas has been a guest lecturer for the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association since 1992; lecturing on selected topics, including worker’s compensation, personal injury, (which includes automobile accidents, product liability, and premises liability) as well as the effective utilization of the American Medical Association Guides to the evaluation of permanent impairment in workers’ compensation, personal injury cases, trial tactics, and civil jury trials.

Based on a confidential survey of other attorneys in this area by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, D. Russell Thomas received an AV Rating. The A – is the mark of the highest rating of legal ability. The V – is the mark of the highest standards of legal ethics.

According to Martindale-Hubbell, “AV Peer Review Rating shows that a lawyer has reached the height of professional excellence. He or she has usually practiced law for many years and is recognized for the highest level of skill and integrity.”
Mr. Thomas is also a graduate of the Keenan Trial Institute in Atlanta, Georgia which is a school for advanced trial techniques for practicing attorneys. I graduated in 2019 and am one of only 350 graduates in the United States.
